DEC Server 3305
This MB is referred to as either Noritake or Corelle.
It is the same machine as the AS800.

Technical pages on DEC's site.

  • WinNT
    WinNT comes on this machine, so to use another OS, you'll need to switch from AlphaBIOS to SRM. Follow the instructions on in the manual for switching.
  • Linux
    Redhat 6.1 CD will boot on this machine. (I downloaded the ISO sometime in March/April 2000, I think) At the SRM prompt, with the Redhat 6.1 CD in the CD-ROM (dka400),

    >>> boot dka400 -fi /kernels/generic.gz -fl root=/dev/scd0

    I had a GUI install and didn't have to manulally set BSD labels (unless DiskDruid handled that automatically). And I could boot from /boot. Then in SRM, I had to change boot,,:

    >>> set
    >>> set
    >>> set

    I am having trouble compiling a new kernel. It is currently running 2.2.13-0.9, and I was trying to use 2.2.16. Hopefully a few more times through xconfig should fix that....
  • NetBSD
    NetBSD 1.4.1 will run on this machine. The instructions provided worked very smoothly. (I used a net-based install. So, booted off floppies, then installed off of, uh, maybe the Walnut Creek server and www.cs.umn.edu.)
  • RAM
    This machine uses 168pin EDO ECC 60ns DIMMs. Crucial.com is not the only source. Check the back of most computer magazines and you can find cheaper ($2000/GB instead of $3500).
